Enhanced Disclosure
An Enhanced CRB check is the highest level of criminal record check and is used for positions working with children and vulnerable adults. It will contain the same PNC information as the Standard
check, but also includes a check of police records held locally and information held by the Independent Safeguarding Authority.
One list holds information on individuals who are unsuitable for working with children, the other on those who are unsuitable for working with vulnerable adults. Individuals placed on either list are
not allowed to work with the relevant group. An individual can be on both lists.
The CRB recognises that the Standard and Enhanced Disclosure information can be extremely sensitive and personal, therefore it has published a Code of Practice and employers’ guidance for recipients
of Disclosures to ensure they are handled fairly and used properly.
The Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) assesses every person who wants to work, or volunteer, with children or vulnerable adults. The check is completed using information previously found in:
- the Protection of Vulnerable Adults (PoVA) list
- the Protection of Children Act (PoCA) list
- List 99 (a list of people considered unsuitable for work with children, held by the Department for Children, Schools and Families).
This information is assessed to decide whether to give the individual concerned ISA registration, or put them on one of the ISA Barred Lists. It is not a replacement for a CRB, but can be done whilst waiting for a CRB check to come through.
The records are constantly updated as fresh information is gathered. If new data indicates that an individual might pose a risk to vulnerable people, they will be put on one of the ISA Barred Lists immediately.
If your employee has an enhanced CRB Disclosure, it is not necessary to have them checked against the ISA as this would have already been carried out within the CRB process.
